Interlocking Pavers

Interlocking pavers are the backbone of driveways and high-traffic areas, engineered to handle vehicles and Canadian freeze-thaw cycles by distributing weight through their interlocking design.

What to consider when selecting pavers?

  • Surface Texture: Smooth finishes for modern aesthetics; tumbled/weathered edges for timeless European looks.

  • Joint Width: Tight joints (2-3mm) create a monolithic appearance; wider joints (5-8mm) accommodate traditional patterns.

  • Permeable vs. Standard: Permeable pavers meet municipal stormwater bylaws and allow you to increase driveway size legally.

  • Color Blending: Multi-color blends hide tire marks and add visual depth; solid colors require more maintenance to look pristine.

  • Thickness: 60mm for patios and walkways; 80mm minimum for driveways to withstand vehicle torque.

Patio Slabs & Large-Format Tiles

Patio slabs create the modern, expansive aesthetic of natural stone with the consistency and durability of engineered materials. Available in large formats (up to 36"x36"), these products minimize joint lines for a seamless, contemporary look.

What to consider when selecting Slabs:

  • Slab Size vs. Base Precision: Large slabs require perfectly level bases. Even 1-2mm variance creates "lippage" (trip hazards).

  • Material Type: Porcelain/Sintered stone is non-porous and stain-proof; concrete slabs are more affordable but require sealing.

  • Surface Finish: Textured finishes provide slip resistance for pool decks; smooth finishes suit covered patios.

  • Thermal Properties: Light colors reflect heat (cooler underfoot); dark colors absorb heat (uncomfortable in summer sun).

  • Edge Profile: Rectified edges (machine-cut straight) allow 3mm tight joints; natural edges require wider spacing.

Gardening & Retaining Walls

Retaining walls serve dual purposes: structural earth retention and visual definition. These engineered masonry systems resist lateral soil pressure through mass, friction, and (for walls over 24") geogrid reinforcement. They transform unusable slopes into functional terraced landscapes.

What to consider when selecting Wall Systems:

  • Wall Height: Under 4 feet: gravity-based; over 4 feet: requires geogrid reinforcement and may need engineering approval.

  • Block Style: Architectural blocks (straight faces) suit modern designs; natural-split faces blend with traditional landscapes.

  • Drainage: All retaining walls require drainage stone backfill and weeping tiles to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup.

  • Setback Angle: Most systems have a built-in 6-8° setback (batter) for stability—critical for walls over 3 feet.

  • Cap Options: Flat caps create clean horizontal lines; rounded caps soften the profile and provide comfortable seating.

Mansory Stones & Building Blocks

Masonry stones are the foundation of outdoor living structures—fire pit surrounds, outdoor kitchen islands, pillar accents, and seat walls. Unlike pavers (which are laid dry), masonry units are installed with mortar for permanent, monolithic construction.

What to consider when selecting Mansory Stones:

  • Application Type: Veneer stones (thin-cut) for facing; full-depth blocks for structural cores.

  • Mortar Compatibility: Smooth stones require stronger bond mortars; textured stones hide joint imperfections.

  • Thermal Expansion: For fire pits, use stones rated for refractory applications or install a fire-brick liner to protect the masonry.

  • Color Consistency: Natural stone varies by quarry batch; manufactured stone offers predictable color matching for repairs.

  • Joint Style: Flush joints suit modern designs; recessed or weathered joints create shadow lines for traditional aesthetics.

Gardening Edging & Border Stones

Edging stones define the boundary between hardscape and softscape (lawns, gardens, mulch beds). Beyond aesthetics, they serve a critical function: preventing grass encroachment into paver joints and creating a mowing strip that eliminates the need for string trimming.

What to consider when selecting Edging:

  • Height Differential: Edging should sit 1-2 inches above lawn grade to act as a physical barrier against spreading grass roots.

  • Curved vs. Straight: Modular curved edging accommodates radius gardens; straight units require cutting for curves.

  • Installation Method: Can be set on concrete for rigidity or on compacted stone dust for flexibility in frost-heave zones.

  • Matching vs. Contrasting: Match edging to paver color for seamless transitions; contrast edging creates defined borders.

  • Top Profile: Rounded tops prevent trip hazards and lawn mower damage; flat tops can double as a garden bed cap.
